Individualism

I am a drafter by profession.

DSC_2124
The “old style” of drafting and design is still in my blood.

DSC_2125

Instead of the computer aided drafting I use today..

where all the drawings look the same..

Same font, same north arrows, same leader lines, same everything.  No individuality.

DSC_2132
As a child, I would play with my dad’s drafting tools and I developed my own style.

DSC_2134

In high school and college, we were encouraged to incorporate
our artistic ability into our designs.

DSC_2133

I loved the way each designer had their own style. Some drawings were very clean and simple,
others were quite fancy.

DSC_2139

My first drafting jobs were board work, it took longer to do a drawing and each drafter’s drawings were a work of art.

DSC_2146

Now days it is quicker to produce a large drawing on the computer, but the artistic integrity is gone.

DSC_2133

I guess we really do live in a “big box” society…
everything needs to be quicker, easier and massed produced.

DSC_2140

After hours of following corporate standards, nothing gives me more pleasure than to pull out the mechanical pencil, twirl it around in the old school sharpener and make a fine stroke on vellum paper.

DSC_2148I have my Dad’s old drafting set, that I cherish.   I have picked up old slide rules, curves, sharpeners, pencils and books along the way.  It reminds me of the old ways and how much pride there was using these tools of trade.  I can’t pass up old drafting tools in antique malls and estate sales!

DSC_2142

It is nice to be part of a community of bloggers, friends and locals who are true artists, designers, writers, bakers, photographers, etc., who take pride in their individualism and encourage other artists to do the same.

Galatians 6:4

Being Articulate

With the signs of spring emerging, the frequent sounds of bird songs and baby calves being born, I have a renewed understanding of what it is to be articulate.

cowcalf

I am not talking about being articulate in my speech pattern, but being articulate in the way I perceive life around me.

I tend to get lackadaisical sometimes and just go through the motions of the day.  I get caught up in my own standard-issued life with blinders on.  Spring always wakes me up a bit and gets my juices flowing again.

IMG_2586

I start to see what is outside the gate.  The wildflowers that have popped up overnight.  The bird’s nest on my trellis and the green grass.  When I take my blinders off and really look around, life is happening and going on with itself whether I participate or not.  A beautiful life.

IMG_4612

I have learned that I have to listen to the rhythm of what God and nature are trying to tell me.   I have to be diligent to keep my mind focused on seeing the signs that are put before me.

heartrocksmall

After some troubling news my family had lately, I was walking, meditating and praying for a sign that everything would be ok.  As I was just aimlessly wandering along the river, I found a tiny little heart carved into a rock.  I really believe it is a sign from the Heavens that our prayers will be answered.  He was articulate in His response to my prayer.

IMG_4512

Nature is very articulate and deliberate.  It shows up, lives it’s best life, makes the very best of every situation and moves on.  It does not dwell on the should haves and didn’t haves.  I truly believe that is what our Higher Power intended us to do.  I have been equipped with the necessary tools to live my life to it’s fullest.

IMG_4798

We live in extraordinary times.  New technology, new discoveries and ample freedom.  I can talk to my brother who travels the globe with a click of a send button.  I can order beautiful art from another state whom I would have never known of without the internet.  I have friends from all over the world who have become very near to me through blogs, Facebook and Instagram.

IMG_6167

However, I have tunnel vision lately.  Checking my iPhone for updates and posts.  Seeing other’s beautiful gardens and travels when I have missed my own.

IMG_4511

My garden is coming alive with perennials and herbs.  My travels may not be far, but our little country farm  and town offers plenty of sights and charm.  That is what I am trying to achieve, to be articulate in my thoughts, my sight and through listening.  To not rehearse my life, but to live it.  The good, bad, scary and ordinary life.

IMG_3875

I watch my young grandsons play with full intension and focus.  A pile of caliche stone, a few old toy trucks and a plastic cup makes for hours of fun.  I have learned to have fun doing small things through them.  That wading in a cold creek in February is fun, running as fast we can, skipping and throwing rocks is the best thing ever.  They live an articulate life because they haven’t been told not to.

I know that life can not be easy and our world is in turmoil.  We are bombarded daily with horrible news, sick friends and family.  We have to pay attention to what is going on around us and participate in our convictions.   But that doesn’t mean we have to be callous and stolid.

IMG_4720

There is joy, happiness and love…all around.  Life needs participation and excitement.  It is spring, a renewal of the spirit and mind.  Let’s pay attention to life’s details and delight in all that is offered daily.

home..It mean different things to different people.  To some, it may mean a palatial spread with lots of ornate decorations, expensive art and an out of this world technical amenities.  Some may prefer a country setting with pastorals view or even a charming, simplified bungalow.

FullSizeRender 13

A home may be a hut with a mud roof, a lean to made with scrap metal or even a boat.

IMG_3558

I love the old saying “Home is where the heart is”.   To me, home is with people I love.  They may live thousands of miles away, but they are still home.  It is a feeling that makes me content, loved and safe.

IMG_2559

My domestic affections are centered around our home.  I may be old-fashioned, but I love being home, making a home and tending to our home.  I love the smell of a clean home filled with music and flowers.  To see the sun’s own rhythm as it crosses the sky creating sun light across the floors.

IMG_4288

My husband and I have been living in my art studio for a year now as we build our new home.  Going from a large, two story home to 600 square feet was scary and stressful at first.  We have learned the dance of simplifying and uncluttering.  To have what is only necessary.  We have two storage buildings full of stuff and I really haven’t missed it.  Having experience this has made me grateful and humble.  We are very fortunate to have a place that we love so much, some are not as lucky.  I do not take one thing for granted.

IMG_4032

As we watch our home being built, we don’t know how we will adjust with more room.  Don’t get me wrong, we are very excited and grateful to have our home being built just like we want, but I think we will miss our closeness.  (maybe not the tiny, TINY closet space)

We will be like the sand crab, trading our small shell for a slightly larger one.

IMG_9576

Having a home, whether you are human or an animal, it means to be sheltered and loved.  To be understanding and tolerant of each other.  To give each other room to breathe, yet be close enough to comfort.

IMG_2531

So if you live in a palace, cabin, hut or tiny barn, like us.  Home IS where the heart is…

IMG_5383

It is where our family lives, even if we aren’t all related.

Have a happy day!

Psalm 91:1-2

Laughter

Laugher:
[laf-ter, lahf-]
noun
1. the action or sound oflaughing.
2. an inner quality, mood, disposition, etc., suggestive of laughter;
mirthfulness:

a man of laughter and goodwill.
3. an expression or appearance of merriment or amusement.
4. Archaic. an object of laughter; subject or matter for amusement.

What would the world be without laughter and humor?  It is a sad day when I don’t laugh out loud.  I find humor and enjoyment everyday and everywhere.   Even if I hardly see a soul that day, there is always something to smile about.

I was raised by parents who loved to laugh.  My Mom was the funny bone in our family.  Her humor was wicked and hysterical.  Humor and laughter was in her blood.  She came from a long line of funny women.  My grandmother would say the funniest things at the most inappropriate times.  It was so hard not to snicker, she had a way of cutting her eyes at us, giving us the “high sign” not to laugh right now, but just pay attention to the funny stuff going on around us.  After it was free and clear, we would laugh about it for hours.  My most favorite memories were spending time with my grandmother, her sisters, my mother and her sisters.  We would laugh about anything.  It was like having Lucille Ball, Carol Burnette, Betty White, Sandra Bullock, Tiny Fey and every other funny woman in the room at the same time.

My mom was saying funny things and trying to make us laugh 20 mins before she passed.  God has lots of laughter and joy now!

meandmom

I am hardwired to find amusement in everyday life.

I am, thankfully, married to a man with a quick, wicked humor.  I love that most about him.  We laugh from sun up to sun down.

IMG_4548

We are bent on passing enjoyment, fun and silliness down to our kids and grandkids.. I think they got it!
12028654_10205868576731715_1082891718390418287_o-2

Our grandkids look at life is such a way that everything is fun.  And why shouldn’t it be? Having a sense of enjoyment is free for the asking.

There is so much crazy, bad stuff being thrown at us everyday.  I know people that get caught up in that and it brings them down.  They don’t see the good stuff, the funny stuff, the goofy stuff right under their nose.  It is a shame to always look at the bad side.

IMG_3546

God intended us to laugh, why would he have put so many funny things on earth?  Like the Platypus or that lizard with the rotating eyes?   I find  humor in nature and animals to be inspiring!  They really don’t know that the world is in chaos, they choose to find joy..

IMG_1083 2

This is just a weird photo. My cow Hilda eating my cactus while Lulu acts all tough…

It is great to have friends that share the same sense of humor that I do.  It is weird how we somehow find each other!

Nothing is better than having a meal with good friends and laugh.  It can be a business meeting or just hanging out, if we are laughing, it is all good!

Finding happiness and joy is easy.  Just look around!  Everything is an adventure in fun if we watch innocent and young.  Standing on a gate and watching the cows is so much fun!  I would have probable just feed the cows, gave them a head rub and move on to the next chore.  But our youngest grandson had it right!  Stay and wonder in the sun for a while and smile at the cows,  what is the hurry?

IMG_0032

So take that time to swim in the stock tank with your dog and kids.  Go for a walk and watch the squirrels chase each other or a baby calf frolic in the pasture.  You will feel so much better afterwards and your mood will be ecstatic, I promise!

IMG_1164

So laugh when you want to, laugh OUT LOUD!  It is contagious!  You will make everyone around you happy…

IMG_4866

…and you will feel even happier!
